Shade Nets in Winter: Shifting Roles from Sun Protection to Frost Protection
Shade netting isn't just for summer. In winter, floating it over overwintering vegetables slows ground heat loss and shields leaves from cold wind, frost and snow, providing frost protection while staying breathable and avoiding condensation. Choose a lightweight net with moderate shading rate, lay it loosely without crushing seedlings, and remove it promptly when temperatures rise. In extreme cold, combine it with small hoop houses or other covers. Used correctly, one net can switch from sun protection to frost protection.
