This hiking trip gave me a profound realization: sometimes, a simple tarp is even more important than a tent. Before setting out, I checked the weather forecast, and it had explicitly predicted clear skies. Yet, no sooner had we reached the mountainside than the rain began to fall; by evening, it had intensified into a steady, ceaseless downpour.
The few of us exchanged helpless glances—in weather like this, let alone lighting a fire to cook, even finding a dry spot to sit down had become a challenge. Fortunately, one of my teammates was experienced; he pulled a tarp from the side pocket of his backpack. Working together in a flurry of activity, we located four trees, tied the corners of the tarp to them, and propped up the center with a trekking pole—just like that, a makeshift rain shelter was complete. The tarp wasn't particularly large, but it was just big enough for the four of us to huddle beneath.
More importantly, it left a small patch of ground in the center—untouched by the rain—where we could build a fire. My teammate pulled out a small bottle of alcohol gel, laid down a few dry pine twigs, flicked his lighter, and *whoosh*—a flame instantly sprang to life. That night, we sat gathered around the fire, cooking noodles and drying our soaked socks. The rain dripped down along the edges of the tarp, forming a curtain that shielded us from the damp, biting cold outside.
The firelight danced across everyone's faces, casting a warm, comforting glow. Some say that people climb mountains to see the scenery. But after that trip, I came to believe that sometimes, the memories that linger longest are actually those small moments of simple happiness found amidst such chaotic, trying times—moments like having a humble tarp, and a flickering flame that refuses to be extinguished by the rain.
