Over the past couple of days, a unique new feature has appeared in my small courtyard: a rabbit hutch constructed from green camouflage netting. Unless you look closely, you might easily mistake it for nothing more than a dense clump of bushes tucked away in the corner of the yard.
Here is how it came about. The two little rabbits we keep as pets have grown increasingly lively, and their original cage had begun to feel cramped and stuffy. I started wondering: could I build them a shelter in the yard—one that offered more freedom and felt closer to nature? It needed to be well-ventilated so they wouldn't get stifled, yet also provide a sense of security so they wouldn't spend their days being spooked by all the comings and goings around them. That is when the green camouflage netting crossed my mind.
This material—with its fine mesh and coloration that blends seamlessly with foliage—is typically used for outdoor concealment, yet it proved to be surprisingly well-suited for building a rabbit hutch. I began by driving several wooden stakes into the ground to fence off a semi-enclosed area in the corner of the yard. I then draped the camouflage netting over the top and sides, leaving a gap at the bottom to ensure proper airflow.
The netting hangs loosely, allowing the breeze to drift through while filtering the sunlight into dappled patterns—and, crucially, keeping the rain out. The most delightful part is that, once the green netting was draped into place, the little hutch practically "vanished" amidst the holly bushes and mint patches in the yard. Unless you walk right up to it, you would never even realize that two fluffy little creatures are living inside.
On the very first day they moved into their new home, the two rabbits—ears pricked high in alertness—spent a good while sniffing the air before cautiously venturing inside. Before long, they were frolicking beneath the netting—digging in the soil, rolling around, and chasing one another in playful sprints. By the afternoon, they were sprawled out in the shadiest corner, dozing with half-lidded eyes; their tails would give an occasional, gentle twitch, making them look utterly content.
I squatted nearby and watched them for a long time. The camouflage netting blocked out the harsh, direct sunlight while also filtering out some of the external noise and potential disturbances. For rabbits—naturally timid little creatures—an environment that allows them to see the outside world without leaving them completely exposed likely offers the ultimate sense of security.
I used to believe that when building a shelter for pets, the sturdier the structure, the better. Now, however, I’ve come to realize that sometimes, providing a sense of being "unseen" is far more thoughtful than simply providing a physical "barrier." A sheet of breathable green netting—devoid of the coldness of concrete or the rigidity of wire mesh—has nonetheless given these rabbits a place that truly feels like "home."
If you also keep small animals in your yard, why not give this simple yet charming method a try? A piece of camouflage netting and a few wooden stakes won't cost you much, but they will earn you the daily pleasure of watching your little companions doze in perfect peace. That sense of healing—that feeling of pure, quiet contentment—is worth more than anything else.
