As the height of summer arrives, scorching sun and soaring temperatures pose a significant challenge for livestock farms. During this critical period, a seemingly ordinary shade net can transform into a "cooling guardian" for animals such as chickens, ducks, pigs, and sheep.
For poultry like chickens and ducks, high temperatures can drastically reduce feed intake and egg production rates. Installing shade nets over outdoor runs or ventilation windows effectively blocks direct sunlight, lowers ground temperatures, and mitigates heat stress, thereby keeping the birds active and ensuring more consistent eggshell quality.
Pigs, lacking sweat glands, are particularly susceptible to heat. Under high-temperature conditions, fattening pigs and sows are prone to loss of appetite, heavy panting, and even miscarriage. Erecting shade nets over piggery roofs or open-air exercise yards can lower indoor temperatures by 3–5°C, stimulating a recovery in feed intake and significantly reducing the risk of heatstroke.
Although sheep are generally cold-hardy, hot and humid environments can easily trigger respiratory diseases and reduced feed consumption. Covering sheep sheds or shelters with shade nets creates a cool, well-ventilated microclimate, allowing the flock to ruminate more calmly and achieve better weight gain. Shade nets are simple to install, cost-effective, and reusable.
By selecting a net with an appropriate density—typically one offering a 75% to 85% shading rate—and securing it 30–50 centimeters above the roof or trellis, an insulating layer is created that enhances the cooling effect.
In summary, whether for chickens, ducks, pigs, or sheep, the judicious use of shade nets not only minimizes losses caused by high temperatures but also enhances animal welfare; it represents a practical strategy for livestock farmers—one requiring minimal investment while delivering high returns.
